Estimating Thread Usage

Thread dye lots do change, so it is important to purchase enough thread to complete a project. Estimating thread usage is not an exact science and can be challenging. Try using the following method to estimate how much thread you will need to stitch a particular area of needlework.

· Stitch a one-inch square sample on the canvas or fabric outside of the design area.
· Use the thread and stitch you intend to use for the project area.
· Keep track of the thread length and number of strands of thread you use in the sample square.
· Then, estimate the number of squares in the project area.
· Multiply that number by the number of strands of thread you used in the sample square.

This will give you a rough idea of the total amount of thread needed to complete that area of the project. Of course, you will want to add an extra few strands to your total to allow for mistakes or other mysterious disappearances.
